Guardian Editor Sue Chiera | Guest Speaker |
Sue Chiera is the Editor of the Geraldton Guardian. Her main task is to ensure the quality and the accuracy of stories that appear in the paper, but she admits she is not always 100% successful in this! The Guardian is a our local paper aimed at presenting local news in a balanced way. It is a recorder of local history and achievements. It has a lot of power, in that it can galvanise people to get things done, eg the local community bank. It also has the power to make or break people, a heavy responsibility. There are many challenges, including meeting strict deadlines, balancing advertising with editorial, breaking news with people’s privacy, shock and drama versus “good news” stories. The internet as a new medium to access the latest news has also been impacting heavily on the printed media.

Sue feels a lot of the Guardian’s present success is down to her dedicated editorial staff, who have to be calm under pressure! Sue was thanked by Tony Nikola who commented that in the old days, local TV used to read the Guardian on camera to fill the local news spot!
