The L.E.A.D. Program

Guest Speakers: Lisa McInerney works for Ngala MidWest/Gascoyne where she runs the L.E.A D project – Leadership, Exploration and Development. She did a young leader’s course with the Chamber of Commerce and is a former RYLA participant.

The L.E.A.D program she manages has thirteen participants who are involved in an eight month course. One of the participants is Sylvia Jones who Lisa introduces.

Sylvia provided the following notes after her presentation this morning:

About me: I work part time as a Client Services Co-ordinator for Ascend Business Results. I am also part way through a Diploma of Digital Marketing. I’m particularly passionate about small business and would like to continue to grow in my role at Ascend, as well as offer Digital Marketing coaching and support to local businesses in the future.

My LEAD participation: LEAD has already impacted my work and personal life, I feel more empowered and confident as a leader and I have a great new set of skills in communication, project planning, public speaking and more. I believe the biggest highlights of the LEAD program are that we are being provided with relevant and focused local knowledge and shaped to be Geraldton’s leaders; and that we are able to have direct contact with successful and influential Geraldton people who we otherwise might not get the chance to meet and network with.

In the future of the program I am looking forward to what we will learn, who we will meet and how we can apply it to our lives. I feel I already have a strong network of peers from the LEAD program and I expect that will continue to grow throughout.

Community project: As part of the LEAD program community projects I have taken on the role of co-ordinator for Read Write Now. RWN provides free tutoring to adults who wish to improve their reading and writing skills. We match volunteer tutors with students to undertake one-on-one sessions in an informal and confidential environment. I am actively seeking tutors as well as seeking opportunities to gain exposure and raise awareness of the program and the literacy issues our community faces to try and remove the shame surrounding this issue.

Tony Emmott with a vote of thanks to Lisa and Sylvia.
