Guest Speaker Warren Nathan is a Rotarian and talks to the subject of the warrior and Stand To. Warren performed a Maori warrior “dance” to start his presentation. He saw service in the NZ Army taking the choice of joining an institution instead of perhaps going to gaol. He learnt to be a carpenter in the army. He spent ten years building things in the army and a total of 28 years in military service. He enjoyed the experience of service and leading men and also learnt what not to do from his fellow army colleagues on his journey from carpenter to Combat Engineer. It gave him the chance to lead men. The NZ Army was not unlike Rotary in that it provided the opportunity to serve. Military service gave him confidence, authority, comraderie and brotherhood. Maori Greeting |
Warren, a little more sedate! Questions Hugh L – Where do you come from in NZ? Ian J – What is the Talking Stick? Grant W – What is your Maori name? Ray H – Why are there more Maoris on the North Island? Viki F –Do Maoris consider themselves indigenous? Warren told a strong story about how the Maoris arrived in NZ about 1,000 years ago and killed, ate and exiled the local inhabitants many who fled to the South Island.
