The Doc in Uniform!

The Bubble is About to Burst! An Omicron update!

We didn’t have an official Guest Speaker, but Docker Doc gave us a Nostradamus look at the Covid future.

  1. The borders are coming down on Feb 5 and our Covid free bubble will burst.
  2. How hard we land depends on the level of vaccination, 90% fully vaccinated is the target, but many of our regions are nowhere near that level particularly in the vulnerable aboriginal communities. This may result in travel restrictions between regions.
  3. The Omicron variant is the big issue at the moment. It appears vaccination is less effective against this as immunity starts to wear off. Hence the new drive for “booster” shots from 5 months after the last shot, which may be dropped to four in the near future. Keep alert for changing health advice!
  4. Children 5-12 will be eligible from January 10. Although rarely seriously affected by Covid, as anyone with kids would know, they are brilliant spreaders of infection!
  5. Although it appears to be less severe, Omicron, by its high infectivity, will infect more people and the sheer weight of numbers may increase hospitalisations, ICU admissions and death.
  6. The Mob attentively listening!

  • Unfortunately this will mean some restrictions such as mask wearing in certain situations and reduced numbers for venues and “Vaccine passports” are likely to be required.
  • It is apparent from what is happening in NSW that 94% of patients in hospital and ICU are not fully vaccinated.
  • If we don’t vaccinate the 3rd World where virus mutations can occur due to high infection rates, we will run out of letters in the Greek Alphabet! A challenge for Rotary and the World?
  • So the message is: get double vaccinated ASAP and add your booster when eligible. I got my Moderna booster on Thursday (16th) and so far I only have a red mark on my arm to show for it! We in WA can’t stay isolated forever and we will eventually have to learn to live with this virus.
