Shirley with a "Butterfly Bag" | Guest Speaker |
Club Secretary Bruce Ralph introduced Shirley Cartwright as our Guest Speaker. Shirley has a background in nursing, pharmacy and retail. She spoke about her “Butterfly Bag” project. Breast cancer runs in Shirley’s family, so she has seen first hand the difficulties faced by sufferers first hand following mastectomy. She has formed a craft group that has sewed a kit to assist patients post mastectomy. The beautifully sewn bag can not only be used to hold odds and ends, but can be placed over the shoulder to support the drainage bottle post operatively. The bag also contains a U shaped processed wool cushion for placing under the axilla (arm pit to non medicos!) to assist with the swelling post operatively and later to help combat lymphoedema. The bags also contain a lavender bag, bookmarks and an inspirational verse.

The Shoulder Pad Through Peggy Biggs, breast cancer nurse, the bags are given to patients at the hospital. Although rare, men are known to get breast cancer as well and a suitable less feminine alternative is available. Twenty two sets have been made so far. The craft group meets monthly at the Salvation Army Hall and hold workshops there. They are keen to maintain their high standards! Presently they are also making miniature bags as a fundraiser and are always looking for people with sewing skills to join them! Shirley was thanked by PP Dan Crisp and presented with the usual wine glass.
