To Fly a Kite...

Jim Dillon introduced Dave Meder, a local kite maker, who was well known by the Club, having been involved with the last District Conference held in Geraldton.

Dave is a qualified electrical engineer who started flying kites in New Zealand to find solace after a family break up. Buying kites became expensive so he went to a local workshop to learn how to make his own, was asked to supply a couple of local shops and it went from there. He began to get invitations to attend international festivals overseas and became involved in organising festivals as well. Dave requested a year’s leave from his engineering job, which was denied, so he resigned and came to W.A. to set up Pixie Kites with a friend for a year. That was in 1991.

Dave set up a Night Kite Display at the last District Conference held in Geraldton. He has also made numerous banners for organisations in town as well as using his engineering expertise to design different prototypes of kites.

Sail-making fabric and carbon fibre forms the basis of construction as well as hours of labour and sewing skills.

Dave will be involved with the 2018 conference.

Dave was thanked eloquently by Angelo Biviano.
