Rotary Club of Geraldton Greenough Science and Engineering Challenge

This week Geraldton Grammar School hosted the Rotary Club of Geraldton Greenough Science and Engineering Challenge Day and Discovery Day.

This was an awesome event Presented by the University of Newcaslte over 2 days.

On Wednesday over 250 students and their teachers from all of the secondary schools in Geraldton and Dongara came together to complete various STEM-based challenges. This included bridge and catapult building, designing networks and engineering a Mars rover and bionic hand amongst other activities.

On Thursday it was the primary school students’ turn with students from as far away as Mingenew, Yuna, Binnu and Chapman Valley as well as Beachlands, St Francis Xavier Primary School and Geraldton Grammar School students taking part in similar activities.

Students and teachers had a great time and learned a lot about the value and importance of STEM careers and skills.

We would like to thank the generous sponsors of this event especially the Rotary Club of Geraldton-Greenough, The City of Greater Geraldton, Iluka, Bush Heritage Australia and the Geraldton Universities Centre.

We also had many amazing volunteers who helped run the activities, many of these people took days off work and gave up their own time. Without them, this exciting event could not happen, and we are very grateful for their support. It was a fantastic couple of days!

Many thanks the Geraldton Grammar school and Head of Science, Dallas Bruce, for making this event possible.

Presentations were made by Vice President Peter Svensson, representing the Rotary Club of Geraldton Greenough, Mayor Shane Van Styn from the City of Greater Geraldton assisted by Bradley Tapper from Iluka and Brendan Penser from Geraldton Universities Centre.
